Women in Business Leadership Speaker Series 2018: “Together We Motivate”

Originally published on February 28, 2018

The Tempe Chamber of Commerce started off 2018 with an exceptional program, brought to us by the Chamber’s Women in Business Council. These presentations took place over four weeks from January 26th to February 16th, hosted at the MarinaLink venue at the new State Farm regional HQ in Tempe, AZ. The discussions provided insight into the great topics presented by these accomplished Women in Business.

January 26th. Together We Motivate: The Secrets of Modern Day Super Achievers with Dr. Karen Jacobson

An example that Karen gave about how some super achievers work was how youth and adult entrepreneurs in the Phoenix area get out the word about their products and services. one of their successful practices is to attend planned events–or help plan them–to provide an appropriate venue at which to pitch their businesses.

In moving forward to a plan to become a Super Achiever, Karen first had us each write down three strategic goals for 2018 that we would like to achieve. From that “Destination,” she walked us through the DARE acronym as the way to achieve those goals:

D = DRIVE. This is your mindset–you need to be driven. Change your thoughts; changing

physiology leads to changing thoughts.

A = ACTION. Creste an Action List — NOT just a to-do list. Prioritize your top three priorities to start with success.

R = ROADBLOCKS. You need to identify and strategize to navigate past roadblocks.

E = EXPAND. You need to take yourself out of your “comfort zone.”

Some questions to ask yourself as you get going each day include:

  • What do you do to start your day?

  • Does it energize you?

  • Does it motivate you?

  • How does it make you ready/motivated to reach goals?

One of the quotes from Karen that really hits the mark of busy professionals: “Don’t prioritize your schedule; schedule your priorities.”

Also focused on busy professionals is the concept of “Dynamic Equilibrium;” balancing competing metrics, such as saving time, saving resources, etc.

Did you know that the average period for maximum productivity is 15-20 minutes? After that, productivity starts to slowly decline. But…you can do a few simple things to help reset your productivity timer:

  • Roll your neck. Doing very slow neck rolls helps your nervous system reset.

  • Focused breathing. Breathe in for 4 seconds through the nose, hold it for 4 seconds, breathe out for 6 seconds through the mouth.

All-in-all, Karen Jacobson provided a fantastic, upbeat, and motivating presentation that left attendees wanting to go back to their professional endeavors with a renewed sense of purpose and a motivational way ahead!
